AMD Athlon™ II X2 Desktop-Prozessor
Der AMD Athlon II X2 ist der würdige Nachfolger des Athlon X2-Prozessors. Er basiert wie sein größerer Bruder, der Phenom II X2 auf die K10 Architektur und ist der erste Athlon-Prozessor, der DDR3-Speicher unterstützt. Der Athlon II X2 ist ein weiterentwickelter Deneb-Kern und wird ganz ohne L3-Cache auskommen müssen. Trotz dessen spendiert AMD einen vergrößerten L2-Cache, wobei der Cache nun auf 1024 kB pro Kern beträgt und damit höher ist als beim Deneb. AMD drückt durch die Neukonstruktion den Energieverbrauch auf schlappe 65 Watt herunter.
Der neue AMD Athlon II Prozessor ist im Gegensatz zum großen Phenom II X4-Prozessor wesentlich günstiger und soll die breite Masse auf den Socket AM3 umrüsten lassen. Dennoch ist der AMD Athlon II X2-Prozessor fähig, auf AM2+-Plattformen zu laufen, sofern ein BIOS-Update vom Hersteller bereitgestellt wird. Möglich macht das der noch bereitgestellte DDR2-Speichercontroller.
Sicherlich hat AMD in der nächsten Zeit noch einige neue Prozessoren im Angebot, auch einige neue Modelle, die dann den alten Athlon ablösen werden.
Das Namensschema ist viersteilig und wird mit einer x2 angeführt. Die anderen Zahlen geben die Leistungsklasse an.
